Derby day win at Rushden
Doughboys made the short trip to Hayden Road on Boxing Day and came away with all three points after a battling display.
Town had the better of the early exchanges and went ahead after six minutes when Connor Furlong worked room for a cross, which was met at the far post by an unmarked Danny Draper, whose scissor kick couldn’t be kept out by the keeper.
After that it settled down and R&D were able to press more and it took two superb saves by Dean Snedker to keep us ahead.
H-T. R&D 0-1 WTFC
Doughboys stepped up in the second half but were rocked by a laughable dismissal of George Barnwell after 57 minutes for a second yellow card; neither looked justified, indeed he seemed to be the one fouled for the second.
It became a rearguard action after that as Town tightened up, however, R&D seemed to lack ideas and invention, majorly using long cross field balls. The defence held so well that Snedker had few meaningful saves to make.
Doughboys still had their chances and an O’Connor header had to be cleared off the line and Draper was denied a couple of times.
All in all a poor game, but, Town gave everything and just about merited their win, taking them to 9th.
